What is a French drain?
A French drain is a subsurface gravel trench containing perforated pipe that intercepts and diverts groundwater away from buildings, foundations, or low-lying landscape areas.
A French drain works by collecting water that moves through soil and channeling it away from problem areas like basements, patios, or garden beds. The core components are straightforward: a sloped trench dug below the surface, perforated pipe laid in the bottom, gravel surrounding the pipe, and often a landscape fabric layer to prevent soil from clogging the gravel.
The perforated pipe (typically PVC or corrugated plastic) has small holes along its length that allow water to enter as it moves through the surrounding gravel. Gravity does the work, pulling water downslope through the pipe and depositing it at a lower elevation, a dry well, or storm drainage. The gravel acts as a filter and buffer zone, slowing water movement and allowing sediment to settle before the water reaches the pipe.
French drains are especially useful in Spartanburg properties where clay soils trap water and cause poor drainage, or where foundation moisture and yard flooding are recurring issues. They work well alongside surface grading and downspout management.
